Booking closes for Merseyside meeting on February 1st. IPC Librarians' Course 22 April 1999 Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham. Cost UKP75.00. 30 places. Tutor: Caroline Bendix, freelance library conservator, advisor to the National Trust, and consultant to English Heritage. Aimed at librarians and curators, the course will concentrate on book-related topics but will also embrace archive-related problems. Subjects will include book structures, storage and display, environmental factors and their control, protective measures, safe handling plus guidelines for readers, identification of causes that are detrimental to books, the importance of preventive conservation, and basic emergency and salvage requirements. Delegates will be encouraged to discuss and handle objects. An Introduction to Early and Medieval Bookbindings--a foundation to understanding later techniques 27 June to 2 July 1999 St Aldates Conference Centre, Oxford. 14 places Tutor: Christopher Clarkson, freelance book conservator and library consultant. This 5-day workshop, aimed at library and archive conservators, and librarians, will consist of lectures supported by slides, model studies, and field trips within Oxford. Some techniques may be illustrated with practical demonstrations if clarification is needed. The workshop will also cover the identification of binding structures, and the recognition and recording of materials and techniques.
