Brittle paper repair

Many years ago, before I came on board, someone decided the best way
to save brittle pages was to glue, or paste, japanese paper over the
pages. Unfortunately the glue or paste is now yellowing and the
contents of these pages are now becoming unreadable and unusable.

Has anyone had any experience in dealing with this type of problem?
