The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, a part of the
National Gallery of Art, announces a program for the Samuel H.
Kress/Ailsa Mellon Bruce Paired Fellowships for Research in
Conservation and Art History/Archaeology. Applications are invited
from teams consisting of two scholars: one in the field of art
history, archaeology, or another related discipline in the
humanities or social sciences, and one in the field of conservation
or materials science. The fellowship includes a two-month period for
field, collections, and/or laboratory research, followed by a
two-month residency period at the Center for Advanced Study,
National Gallery of Art.

This fellowship is supported by funds from the Samuel H. Kress
Foundation and from endowed funds for Visiting Senior Fellowships
from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Applications will be
considered for study in the history and conservation of the visual
arts (painting, sculpture, architecture, landscape architecture,
urbanism, graphics, film, photography, decorative arts, industrial
design, and other arts) of any geographical area and of any period.
A focus on National Gallery collections is not required.

These fellowships are open to those who have held the appropriate
terminal degree for five years or more and who possess a record of
professional accomplishment at the time of application. Awards will
be made without regard to the age or nationality of the applicants.

Each team is required to submit an application for the Samuel H.
Kress/Ailsa Mellon Bruce Paired Fellowship. Seven sets of all
materials, including application form, proposal, a tentative
schedule of travel indicating the site(s), collection(s), or
institution(s) most valuable for the proposed research project, and
copies of selected pertinent publications must be forwarded by the
application deadline. In addition, each team member must ask two
individuals to write letters of recommendation in support of the
application. Applications are due by 21 March 1998. For information
