Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) is pleased to introduce our Winter 1997 preservation workshop schedule. Did Our Insurance Policy Say That? Risk Management & Insurance Issues For Library & Cultural Collections This new full-day workshop discusses risk management techniques for libraries and cultural collections. Through lecture, discussion and break-out sessions the following topics will be highlighted: valuation of collections; types of property insurance coverage; insuring specific materials; choosing an insurance agent; appraisal. The instructor for this workshop is Jeanne Drewes, Head, Preservation Department, Milton S. Eisenhower Library, John Hopkins University. Guest Presenters: Bob Mair, FEMA Region Four, Response and Recovery; Alison Brown, Museums and Exhibitions Department, Huntington Block Insurance Agency. The workshop is scheduled for Monday, January 26, 1998 from 9am - 4pm at the Atlanta History Center, Atlanta. Disaster Preparedness & Recovery This workshop will help your institution learn how to prepare for and deal with emergency situations and provide the training necessary to plan, organize and execute a disaster plan and salvage operation. In addition to in-depth discussion on the disaster planning process, there will be demonstrations of salvage techniques including air-drying books, separating and drying manuscripts, rinsing books, and drying photographic materials. The instructor is Christine Wiseman, Preservation Field Service Officer, SOLINET. This workshop will be held at Central Florida Library Cooperative, Maitland, FL from 9am - 4pm on Thursday, January 29, 1998. Preservation Management This session outlines the manager's role in organizing and planning preservation activities in a library or archives. It includes lecture and discussions covering the following topics: preservation issues; preservation planning; preservation reformatting; strategies for integrating preservation into library operations; organization of staffing and workflow. The instructor is Julie Arnott, Manager, Preservation Service, SOLINET. The workshop will be held at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC on Tuesday, February 24, 1998 from 9am - 4pm. Beating the Critter Jitters: Integrated Pest Management This workshop will be held in Sewanee, TN at the University of the South, Thursday, March 26, 1998 and run from 9am - 4pm. This full-day session explains and assesses the available strategies for preventing and combating pest problems. Participants will learn to identify common pests, recognize the damage various pests cause to library and archival materials, develop strategies for implementing an integrated pest management program of monitoring and control. The instructor is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director, Chicora Foundation.
