Subject: Security devices
As some of you know, I manage the International Cultural Property Protection Exposition each year for The International Committee On Museum Security of ICOM which is held in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution's National Conference On Cultural Property Protection (next one is 9-12 February 1998 in Washington, D.C.). One of the purposes of this trade show is, not only to exhibit available products and services, but also to provide a forum where the people who design and manufacture protection systems can interact with the potential end-users of these systems. My question to all of you (and I hope I can initiate a discussion): "is there a generally accepted method of affixing (preferably covertly) a micro-transmitter or a small identification device to an artifact so that its location can be tracked or ownership identified?" The devices in question are usually composed of plastic and metal. Your answers will not only aid the designers of such systems, but will increase the level of protection cultural institutions are able to provide their collections.
