Subject: Books with blocked pages
I have personally been involved in building freeze-dry chambers and in providing freeze-drying services for about 8 years. One of my colleagues, Larry Wood, has been building and operating FD chambers for almost 20 years. Clay coated paper will block quickly if allowed to air dry. Freeze-drying will prevent the pages from sticking if they have not begun to dry before they are frozen. However, if the pages are blocked before they are frozen, then freeze-drying will not do anything to help the pages separate. The bottom line for good results in drying coated paper is to freeze it before it begins to dry and then to freeze-dry it (below the triple point of water, 4.57 mm Hg). If this is done the pages will not stick together. Kirk Lively Disaster Recovery Services, Inc. 414 Blue Smoke Ct. W. Ft.
