Required/Preferred Education, Experience, Skills: High school
diploma or equivalent; college background preferred. Formal or
on-the-job training in bookbinding or book conservation. Superior
manual dexterity and demonstrated ability to work with a high degree
of accuracy and precision in a production setting; ability to work
independently with sustained concentration, to organize work flow,
to handle tools and heavy equipment; ability to initiate and adapt
to change, to analyze and solve problems, and to be flexible and
work collaboratively. Experience performing conservation treatment
in a recognized treatment facility desirable; knowledge of standard
microcomputer applications including word processing and spreadsheet
software desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities: Evaluates damaged and deteriorated
library materials from Widener Library general collections and
devises appropriate treatments based on accepted conservation
methods and procedures.  These treatments include: minor repair and
collections maintenance; cleaning, flattening and mending paper;
repairing and rebinding books; preparing materials for microfilming
and rebinding; constructing custom preservation enclosures such as
phase boxes, portfolios, wrappers, and polyester encapsulations;
using computer software to create labels and do computations for
protective enclosures. May be required to participate in disaster
response operations.  Performs normal laboratory maintenance
procedures; assists with and performs other duties as necessary to
achieve the goals of the Conservation Division.

Comments: Work is performed in a busy laboratory environment.  Job
involves operating heavy equipment (cutters, presses, milling
machine); using sharp tools (knives, scalpels); and using a fume
hood to perform chemical treatments (tape removal, deacidification,
mold removal).
