Moving collections

Over the next 5-6 years the collections (approximately 1
million specimens--200,000 ethnographic and 800,000
archaeological) of the National Museum of the American
Indian (NMAI) is scheduled to be inventoried, stabilized and
moved to its new home at the Cultural Resources Center in
Suitland, Maryland. This facility opens 10/1/98.
During this process, the ethnographic and archaeological
collections will be surveyed and stabilized for the move by
the conservation staff.

I would be very interested in anyone's
experiences with this scale of project, levels of stabilization
done during a move (triage, etc.) and meshing conservation
needs with the rest of the move aspects--inventory, packing,
etc. This move will be from New York City to Maryland, has
anyone done a move of that distance? I have been reviewing
the information on surveys from the OSG-L recent question.
Please send any more information you know of or have heard
about. Thank you,

Marian A. Kaminitz
