Subject: Storing and displaying ephemera
I am looking for information or ideas on how to store ephemeral material, particularly trade catalogs, so that the items can be viewed with ease. PH neg manila folders in a filing cabinet are space efficient, but difficult to view. Polyethelene 3 ring binder enclosures allow viewing, but do not protect or provide support for the item (not to mention the question of offgasing). I talked to local libraries, but no one seemed to have a sense of how to handle paper bound material. As a brief introduction, I'm at present a layperson (applying to a local grad program in library and information science) who collects, buys and sells handtool and industrial related books and ephemera... and of course handtools as well. I do what conservative conservation I can on the this material. I also field questions about conservation and unknown tools for the Mid West Tool Collectors web site.
