Mosaic

International Conservation Services, Sydney, Australia are currently
working on a late 1950s mosaic of very large proportions. It is
mounted on several walls and a dome, covers over 1,300 square metres
with over 6 million glass tesserae. Problems appear to be
delamination of tesserae caused by building movement; drumminess in
the substrate; and general cracking. Particular issues are:-

    level and type of documentation

    Eg. photogrammetric recording
        method of investigation

    Eg. partial removal
        method of consolidation

Eg. injection or partial removal of the mosaic pieces
method of accommodating further building movement

We would be interested to share experiences with fellow conservators
who have worked on mosaics of similar periods.
