Subject: Examining watermarks
In Conservation DistList Instance: 11:42, November 5, 1997 Gilliam Boal asked about viewing watermarks. I would argue against encouraging people to come think of this as a kind of casual operation, like using a magnifying glass. Rather, if the handling is to be done, the watermark should be "printed" and filed, so as "to minimize handling" over and over again. See the 1996 Conference at Roanoke, Va., where there were two papers on methods other than beta radiography; the one by Brett Charbeneau, the other by Carol Ann Eggert.
