Salts in gourds

Has anyone had experience removing salts from gourds?  Or does
anyone have ideas about how this might be accomplished?  I am asking
this in behalf of a museum friend in Peru who is confronted with the
problem and would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions you
would care to offer.
