Molds

I was looking for a method to make a mould out of a polychromated
part of a frame, to be able to reconstruct another part of it which
has disappeared. We usually use silicone and Plaster of Paris, but I
don't know if it is the best method. Does anyone know a different
one? If you think that this is a good method, how do you protect the
gold and tempera? Thank you in advance,
