Air fresheners

The staff at one of our historic houses are very keen on putting out
scented air fresheners because they say the house smells musty.
Leaving aside the issue of what this may be telling us about mould
etc, does anyone know a/ what is in air fresheners, and b/ whether
these substances could have any harmful effects on the contents of
the house--carpets, curtains, books etc. Many thanks,
