Subject: Calipr needs assessment software
The Conservation Department of the University of California, Berkeley Library, is pleased to make available on the World Wide Web the upgraded Calipr 3.0xp preservation needs assessment software. Calipr, originally developed in 1989 with the support of the California State Library through its LSCA program, is an automated "expert system" that helps institutions to use statistically sound sampling techniques to assess and quantify the preservation needs of their library and archival collections. Calipr uses the data gathered from a brief survey questionnaire to guide institutions in setting appropriate priorities for preservation action. Calipr 3.0xp has been enhanced with new features including a built-in random number generator for sampling from the stacks, printed reports that explain the recommended preservation actions for those with little background in the field, and an expanded users' manual. Calipr software and manual can be downloaded at no charge directly from the Berkeley Library Digital Sunsite URL:http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/CALIPR/>. Users will also find a sample library map, blank survey form, and sample management report at the site. Please register as a user when you download to be notified of improvements in the software and manual. Calipr is a copyrighted publication of the California State Library and the authors.
