Rough-hewn logs

Our museum is designing an exhibit which will include several rough-hewn
logs and some trees (probably smaller-than-life).  Can anyone provide
information on the sort of treatments required for using natural logs
(materials, time requirements, costs) or suggest methods of making
realistic trees/logs on a tight budget?  I'd appreciate the help,
