Archaeological Conservation:
A key to the Past

United Kingdom Institute for Conservation Archaeology Section
21ST Anniversary Events

To celebrate the Archaeology Section's 21st Anniversary, we are
delighted to announce a series of four one-day events during the
coming year. These conferences, held across the country, set out to
consider not only current issues in conservation but also the future
of the profession as a whole. Many of these themes are of importance
to archaeologists, museum staff and anyone who works in close
association with conservators and the Section would welcome your
support on these four occasions.

Power, Thought and Greed
Museum of London
5th December 1997
Issues of politics, philosophy and economics

The inaugural event will include topics such as conservation in
the archaeological process, the impact of the Treasure Act,
metal detecting and standards in the profession. This will be
followed by an evening birthday party in the foyer of the Museum
    of London.

Playing to the Gallery
Liverpool
11th March 1998
Communication and publicity for the profession

A chance to experience the approach to communication at the new
Conservation Centre at National Museums and Galleries on
Merseyside which encourages public interaction with the staff. A
session with the laboratory video link will be followed by
presentations by those who have been involved in bringing
conservation to the public eye recently.

Work It Out
Out-sourcing Conservation
Edinburgh
7th May 1998
Contracting and competitive tendering

The changes in funding for conservation and in legislation for
archaeology has brought with it a number of problems that need
immediate attention before our profession is edged out of the
    archaeological process altogether.

The Next Generation
Cardiff
12th September 1998
Training, research and funding

The final meeting will take a look at the issues which affect
the future of conservation. Subjects to be presented include
the direction being taken by training courses and accreditation,
priorities of funding and effectiveness of research.
