Subject: Wood consolidation
Does anyone have experience with the use of Abatron products "Liquid Wood" and "WoodEpox" for the consolidation and stabilization of rotted wood that must remain exposed to the weather? As part of a CAP assessment, I am looking for a reasonable solution to suggest for the treatment of large maritime objects that were recovered from Lake Superior, allowed to dry with no treatment or controls (this was before my involvement), and are now in varying degrees of punkiness. The objects are too large to be housed in the Museum, although I am suggesting that at least a shed roof be constructed to shield them from rain and snow. I have also suggested they begin the debate as to how significant these objects actually are. But my feeling is that they are to be treated as instructive/decorative examples, where the main goal is simply that they do not fall apart. It seems that architectural stabilization/restoration is the most applicable paradigm, as opposed to pure object conservation. Any suggestions, opinions, and insights will be appreciated, Jane Ketcham, Conservator Museums of Beloit College *** Conservation DistList Instance 11:17 Distributed: Tuesday, August 19, 1997 Message Id: cdl-11-17-010 ***Received on Friday, 15 August, 1997
