Subject: Cadmium pigments and paint deterioration
In connection with one of its research themes, the MolArt project in the Netherlands is trying to locate examples in paintings of pigment-specific deterioration that appears connected with the use of cadmium yellow and red pigments. We are interested in examples especially from before 1940. A particular focus is the possibility of enhanced degradation of paint binders (chalking) by cadmium pigments, blanching, loss of colour, or other colour changes, drying defects etc. Also, samples of well-documented, early preparations of cadmium pigments or paints (in particular from Levebre-Foinet) are being sought for analysis.
