Museum Technician (Art), GS-1016-5/7, potential GS-7 Objects Conservation Laboratory, Washington, DC The National Gallery of Art Vacancy Announcement No. 97-59 Issue date 8-1-97 Closing date 8-22-97 GS-5 ($20,908 - 27,183 P/A) GS-7 ($25,897 - 33,667 P/A) Federal status candidates who wish to be rated under both merit promotion and competitive certification procedures must submit two complete applications. Duties: Incumbent is assigned to the Object Conservation Department within the National Gallery's Conservation Division. Prepares stock solutions, monitors supply levels, and orders supplies and other equipment as directed. Logs art objects in and out of the laboratory and assists object conservators in checking condition of art objects received for exhibition. Assists in preparation of materials used in treatments. Assists object conservators in photographing objects and in x-radiographing objects and maintaining x-radiographs in order. Labels slides, cross references slides, and maintains the slide collection in order. Maintains offprint file of articles related to conservation. Qualifications: Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for GS-1016-5 or GS-1016-7. At the GS-5 level, this requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service OR 4 years of education above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours in art history and/or studio art. At the GS-7 level, this requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service OR 1 full year of graduate education in art conservation, art history, and/or studio art. Specialized experience is experience within an art conservation environment performing technical support similar to the duties listed above. At the GS-7 level, Federal status candidates must meet the time-in-grade requirements of having been at the GS-5 level for at least one year. Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best qualified candidates. Skill in organizing and maintaining technical reports and files. 6. Skill in utilizing personal computers.
