Senior Preservation Program Officer
Position Title: Senior Preservation Program Officer in the Harvard
University Library Preservation Center
Salary Grade:58  ($43,700 to $ $72,100)

The Senior Preservation Program Officer is responsible for managing
projects and coordinating programs that preserve and improve access
to the collections of the Harvard University Library.  Reports to
the Malloy-Rabinowitz Preservation Librarian and works closely with
the Associate Director of the University Library for Administration
and Programs.  The Preservation Center will begin a 2-year, $1
million NEH-funded microfilming project in August 1997 targeting the
history of science in America.

Required education, experience, skills: Master's degree in library
science, minimum of five years in the field of library preservation,
including extensive experience with large-scale preservation
microfilming operations, record of contributions to the field of
library preservation as evidenced by such activities as publication,
presentation, and the delivery of advanced training.  Strong
organizational skills, ability to establish priorities and achieve
goals; ability to initiate and adapt to change, to analyze and solve
problems, and to be flexible and work collaboratively.  Demonstrated
ability to train and supervise support staff, ability to encourage
team work and staff development; and to plan, organize, and direct
work flow, ability to develop and monitor budgets (including a solid
knowledge of spreadsheet and database management software),
excellent oral and written communication skills, including
demonstrated ability to prepare grant proposals, reports, and
procedural documentation

Duties and responsibilities: The incumbent coordinates the work of
four professional program officers, supervises an office staff
assistant, and manages preservation microfilming projects involving
grant-funded personnel.  Coordinates the work of a staff of
preservation program officers in a team-managed environment and
oversees day-to-day office management. Collaborates with librarians,
curators, and preservation and technical staffs throughout the
libraries to assess needs and to identify contributions that the
Preservation Center can make to the development and growth of
University-wide preservation activities. Coordinates the development
of grant proposals to secure support for complex, large-scale
preservation initiatives.  Manages preservation projects that
function within strict budget and time limits, meet high standards
for quality and productivity; and adhere to local policies and
national standards for preservation and access. Institutional

The Harvard University Library comprises more than 90 libraries
holding 13.3 million volumes, 8 million microforms, 100,000 linear
feet of manuscripts, 5 million photographs, 450,000 maps, and
significant numbers of other types of library and archival
materials.  Programs centrally administered by HUL have
University-wide responsibility and include, in addition to the
Preservation Center, the Office for Information Systems, University
Archives and Harvard Depository.
