Subject: UV filters
Jeanne Drewes <jdrewes<-a t->jhu< . >edu> writes >I am looking for recommendations for uv protection for glass on >table cases. The conservation literature used to include references to an ultraviolet-filtering varnish that could be applied to glass; this material turned out to be entirely inappropriate for museum use. It is hard to imagine any material that could be applied to glass outside a factory that would not affect its transparency in some way. There are several other solutions: fabric covers for the cases when no one is viewing the pieces, UV-filtering Plexiglas used in the cases instead of glass, UV filtering on the skylights, etc. If the light is bounced around off walls that happen to be painted with paints that absorb the UV, there may be less UV hitting the objects than you think. A conservator familiar with these options should be able to help provide the cheapest and most efficient method after seeing the site and the objects. B.
