Workshop on identification of prints, photographs and photomechanical reproductions

From: Karen Potje <kpotje<-a>
Date: Monday, July 21, 1997
The Canadian Centre for Architecture is pleased to present a day-long
workshop on

Identifying, Understanding and Preserving Prints, Photographs, and
    Photomechanical Reproductions
A Workshop for Curators, Conservators, and Historians
Instructor: Luis Nadeau
Guest Speaker: Judith Reed
The Canadian Centre for Architecture
Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Sunday, October 5, 1997
10 am to 6 pm

Luis Nadeau (Atelier Luis Nadeau, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada) will
lead a comprehensive workshop on "The Technical Assessment of Prints and
Photographs (Documentation, Use and Analysis of Physical Evidence)". Mr.
Nadeau, an independent scholar and history of technology specialist, is the
author of the Encyclopedia of Printing, Photographic, and Photomechanical
Processes, (1989, Atelier Luis Nadeau) and has written a series detailing
the history and practice of historic photographic processes. Mr. Nadeau
will emphasize gathering and understanding the physical evidence. He will
provide tips on determining the technical provenance or date of an image
based on characteristics such as the process used, paper dimensions, type of
paper, watermark, and type of ink. During his workshop, participants will
have the opportunity to examine samples of many types of prints, photographs
and photomechanical reproductions, including:  albertypes; aquatints;
4-colour carbons; collotypes; daguerreotypes; Goupil gravures; Leggotypes;
mezzotints; Mosstypes; photoengravings; photopolymergravures; platinotypes;
silver gelatin prints; woodburytypes; and wood engravings. Together we will
consider How, When and Where these prints were made. In lectures, slide
presentations and hands-on study sessions we will learn how this knowledge
can enhance the scholarly value of prints and help to determine appropriate
approaches towards their handling, exhibition and conservation.=20

Judith Reed (Conservation Librarian, New York Botanical Garden
Library) will join us to present a slide lecture and practical
session on The Identification and Care of Architectural
Photo-reproductions. Ms. Reed's talk will be based on her
experience with the New York Botanical Garden Library's large
collection of architectural plans, which includes many architectural
duplicates produced by a great variety of photo-reproductive
processes. She is a co-author of "Photo-Reproductive Processes Used
for the Duplication of Architectural and Engineering Drawings:
Creating Guidelines for Identification", by Judith Reed, Eleonore
Kissel, and Erin Vigneau, an article which appeared in the Book and
Paper Group Annual (Vol. 14, 1995, The Book and Paper Group of the
American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works)
<URL:http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/aic/bpg/annual/v14/reed.html>.
Her presentation will focus on the history of these duplicates,
their intrinsic problems, nomenclature, conservation issues,
storage, handling, and current recommendations for copying originals
and duplicates. During the practical session participants will look
at examples of aniline prints, blueprints, Pellet prints, diazotype
prints, sepia diazotype prints, electrostatic prints, ferro-gallic
prints, gel lithograph prints, photostats, Van Dyke prints and
hectographs.

The Canadian Centre for Architecture is a study centre and museum
devoted to the art of architecture and its history. The workshop
will include a tour of the collections storage facilities and
conservation laboratory of the CCA.

The workshop will be presented in English. Mr. Nadeau is fluent in
French and English and will welcome questions in either language.
