Subject: Roger de la Fresnaye
I am doing research on the canvas type used by the artist Roger de la Fresnaye. I have been contacting conservators and curators in a number of museums in the U.S.A. to either find out from their own investigations the fiber type used or to have "sticky tape" (a la McCrone) samples taken for me to examine. According to the catalogue Raisonne by Germaine Seligman, there are quite a number of de la Fresnaye paintings in private collections. I would very much appreciate hearing from conservators who have examined any de la Fresnaye paintings and know the fiber type or can provide me with a sample of the canvas fiber. Katrina Vanderlip de Carbonnel's excellent and most useful article, "A study of French painting canvases" JAIC (1981:3-20) shows a change in time from hemp to linen to cotton, but some paintings are hemp/linen or linen/cotton blends and some the warp is one fiber and the weft another. Thus careful examination of the sample area is important. Also, I would very much like to hear from or have the names of any conservators at the Musee National d' Art Moderne, Paris and the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen. Thank you.
