Subject: Conference on authentication
Scientific Analysis for Art's Sake Winterthur Museum The role of scientific analysis in the conservation and authentication of art objects will be the topic of discussion on Saturday, November 8, 1997, at Winterthur Museum, in Winterthur Delaware. The conservators and curators at the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum have recently developed an new exhibition entitled Deceit, Deception, and Discovery. It shall highlight fakes and forgeries of decorative art objects. In support of this new exhibit we have organized a science conference that will deal with art authentication and conservation. Analytical science has become an increasingly important tool for studying and authenticating museum objects. Our conference on Saturday, November 8, 1997, will focus on the scientific research program at Winterthur as well as programs at other national institutions such as the Getty Institute and the Smithsonian. We would like to make information about this conference available to your readers, since the conference will deal with cutting edge questions and concerns that conservators and scientists encounter. In order to obtain more information about the conference interested persons may write to me at <15603.udel.edu> or they may call 800-488-3883, 302-888-4600, or TTY: 302-888-4907.
