Subject: Interdisciplinary exhibit at UNC Chapel Hill
An exhibit titled "The Invisible Process: Ingenuity and Cooperation in Finding Women's Lives" will be on view from 3 July through 30 September 1997, Third Floor Exhibit Area, Wilson Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (project directed by Jan Paris, conservator, with Lynn Holdzkom, archivist). The exhibit seeks to make visible the processes employed by both researchers (e.g., historians, sociologists, writers, artists) and those on the technical side of documentation (conservators, archivists, librarians) to produce work that portrays women's lives. The relationships among researchers, the materials they use, and those who preserve and make those materials accessible are complex. This project grew out of a collaboration between an archivist and a conservator and their desire to recognize publicly the complex relationships inherent in the process of doing research that examines women's lives. Using examples of contemporary scholarship and primary sources held by the Library, the exhibit explores the ways that researchers find and use materials to produce works that contribute to the understanding of women and their various roles. Throughout the exhibit, the connections among preservation, access, and research issues are highlighted. The Library is open Monday-Friday, 8-5, and Saturday, 9-1. An exhibit catalog is available. *** Conservation DistList Instance 11:7 Distributed: Wednesday, July 9, 1997 Message Id: cdl-11-7-015 ***Received on Thursday, 3 July, 1997
