The National Archives has a booklet on the compact shelving installed in
the building of Archives II (in College Park). It is available by writing,
calling, or faxing

Our shelving goes into a night mode which parks all the shelves with
about 5" in between. This allows for ventilation, and more
importantly for the sprinklers to put out a fire in the event of one
starting on the shelves.
