White ground lekythoi

From: A. Diana Harvey Gonzalez <dianamma<-a>

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a method of desalinating
white ground lekythoi that they are satisfied with.

We have a group of white ground lekythoi that have very obvious
soluble salt problems, ranging from very obvious efflorescence
sitting on the surface, to spalling and flaking caused by
recrystallization just beneath the surface. We are loath to soak
them because of water soluble pigment decorations, and because
consolidation of these pigments prior to soaking invariably
saturates the surface and changes its appearance. Consolidants are
usually not truly reversible no matter what the theory.

Any suggestions? We do have some old sherds to experiment with, if
necessary.
