North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Librarian for University Archives.
The Special Collections Department, consisting of 10 FTE including
graduate fellows and assistants, is a relatively new department
working to plan and build an innovative, multidimensional special
collections program in support of the University's land grant
mission and the Libraries' strengths in information technology.  The
Special Collections Department includes three collecting areas:
University Archives, Rare Books, and Manuscripts. Major collecting
initiatives currently underway include architecture and entomology.
Planned initiatives for the department include general and special
collections condition assessments, rare book collection analysis,
records management, electronic records, and developing  new
potential collecting areas, such as history of technology,  in
manuscripts and rare books.  Dedicated to developing the use of
electronic resources to improve access to primary source materials,
the department recently automated holdings information and now
provides collection descriptions over the Internet via the NCSU
Libraries Home Page.

Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Head of Special
Collections, directs a comprehensive library program for university
archives, including collection development, processing, and
exhibits.  Participates in the overall management of and planning
for the Special Collections Department including projects and issues
relating to preservation and conservation, arrangement and
description, research/reference services, and collection
development. Collection development emphasizes the academic and
research programs of the university. Works directly with campus
units and programs to evaluate records and develop retention and
disposition schedules.  Prepares exhibits for campus events and is
an ex officio member of the University Committee on Institutional
History and Commemoration.  Supervises assistant archivist.  Serves
on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams and is active
professionally.

Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent, with
concentration in special collections or archival administration.
Minimum three years professional experience in special collections
or archives.  Demonstrated  ability to appraise, acquire, arrange,
describe, and preserve archival records.   Record of activity in
professional organizations. Preferred: Experience as a university
archivist. Experience in developing archival collections of
electronic and paper records that document university research
programs in science and technology.  Experience in developing and
directing institutional records programs.  Professionally active in
Society of American Archivists.

Salary and Benefits: The Libraries offers a competitive salary
commensurate with experience, not less than $38,000 for candidate
who meets required and preferred qualifications. Librarians at NCSU
have academic status without tenure or rank.  Benefits include:  26
days vacation; health insurance (comprehensive major medical or
HMO), and TIAA/CREF, state, or other retirement options. Additional
and optional dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and
legal plans are available.  Tuition waiver program for all campuses
