Mortar with iron filings

Does anyone have any information on mortar with iron filings? It was
used at Fort Clinton/Castle Clinton in NYC in 1808-11 and the joints
became more watertight as the iron expanded. I am having a hard time
finding documentation on this type of mortar. Are there any other
examples?
