19th century loose-lining canvases

From: Alan Phenix <aphenix<-a>

A collaborative research project involving the Tate Gallery, The
National Gallery, The Courtauld Institute of Art and Imperial
College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London will commence
soon to investigate the biaxial mechanical properties of paintings
on canvas. The research group is trying to locate and acquire old
canvases for testing; in particular material such as the primed or
un-primed loose-linings [sometimes called dry-linings] occasionally
fitted to paintings in the 19th century, and which might have been
removed from the original stretcher during conservation treatments.
Well documented samples larger than approximately 30 x 30 cm would
be especially valuable. If anyone has such material that they are
willing to contribute to the research project, please contact either
Alan Phenix of the Courtauld Institute <aphenix<-a t->amolf< . >nl> or Stephen
Hackney of the Tate Gallery <stephen.hackney<-a t->tate< . >org< . >uk>.  Any
packing/shipping costs could probably be covered and contributions
would be given appropriate acknowledgement in publications.
