Introduction to Book Repair

This full day workshop is intended to introduce participants to the
variety of considerations which are necessary to undertake in an
on-site book repair operation.  They will have the opportunity to
practice a number of basic hands-on book repair techniques, and
discuss which options may be best suited to the particular needs of
their institution, collections and users.  Participants will be
furnished with a list of suppliers, catalogs, and a small
preservation tool kit ($45 value) to take with them.

This seminar is a introductory hands-on workshop aimed at
librarians, archivists, and staff who have an interest in learning
the nuts and bolts of book repair.

The speaker for this workshop is Catherine Aster, collections
conservation librarian for the General Libraries at The University
of Texas at Austin. She is responsible for all physical treatment
decisions concerning library materials, training branch library and
preservation department staff in basic through advanced book repair
techniques, and the supervision of bindery preparation, book repair
and in-house pamphlet binding units.  Ms. Aster also guest lectures
in the GSLIS Preservation and Conservation Studies, and she has
taught hands-on workshops in Utah and Texas.  Ms. Aster's previous
work experience includes conservator positions at Brigham Young
University, Yale University and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research
Center at UT-Austin.  She had been a professional associate in the
American Institute for Conservation since 1991.

Cost for the workshop is $195.00, or $175 each for a group of three
or more.  Fee includes supplies, catalogs and other handouts, a
$45.00 value preservation toolkit, and refreshments (lunch on your
own).

Registration is limited to 20.  Pre-payment is required.  A waiting
list will be kept in case of cancellations.
