Labels and location control

Wai-kwok Wan asked about labels for archives location control. One
of the primary considerations for attaching labels will be how long
the adhesive on the label will last. It is critical to ensure that
the labels never come into contact with any materials housed within
your files--the documents you are trying to preserve. Adhesive
labels present 2 major problems: 1) potentially losing descriptive
information when the adhesive fails and the label falls off ; 2)
[perhaps of greater consideration], if the label is in close
proximity to the file's contents, when the label detaches, it may
retain just enough adhesive to reattach itself to a document in the
file, necessitating time-consuming (therefore expensive)
conservation treatment to remove. I believe there has been some
previous discussion in past DistList discussion. You may want to
check the COOL archives.
