Subject: Photo albums
A museum patron has asked for advice in preserving two WPA photograph albums (late 1930s). The albums consist of three ring binders with pages of heavy card stock, black in one album and yellow in the second. Several loose pages, also punched for a three ring binder, are inserted in the front of one album. Many photographs are detached. The albums will be used as reference material in a state department office. The albums are generally in good condition. Because they will be used, would it be appropriate to insert each page in a Mylar sleeve in a new binder, while preserving the original binder? Interleaving would probably become an irritant to the office staff, and be removed. How should the identifying tabs on the dividers be treated? I've recommended reattaching the photographs with two small dabs of PVA--is there a better way? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks for the help.
