Subject: Position at Institute of Archaeology, London
Expert System in Archaeological Conservation Applications are invited for an 18 month post at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. The Institute, in collaboration with the University of East Anglia and the University of Hamburg, has been awarded a contract by the European Commission to develop an expert chemical model for preventing salt damage in porous materials. The thermodynamic aspects are being handled by the Universities of East Anglia and Hamburg, and the Institute of Archaeology is now looking for a suitable person to develop an exert system to front the thermodynamic model. The system's primary function is to receive data on the ionic composition of the salts that are causing damage to artefacts or monuments. Through links with graphical packages, databases and the thermodynamic model (which is written in Fortran), the system will then predict environmental conditions by which further damage may be minimised. The successful applicant, who will be free to select the expert system shell of his/her own choice, will preferably bring expertise in both expert systems and in archaeology or conservation. Knowledge of html would be an advantage. The salary will be on the Research Staff 1A scale (up to 16,927 Pounds pa, plus 2134 Pounds London weighting).
