Subject: Corroding bronze
I would like to find advisors for the following questions, preferably "close to home" for my colleagues in Belgium, who wrote as follows: "I would like assistance concerning a collection of metal objects (bronze and iron) with active corrosion. The owners want to display the collection, and need to know: * What type of silicone should be used to seal the showcases? * What would you suggest to maintain a low relative humidity inside the showcases? * Can a kind of 'plasticene' be used to 'keep' small objects in place, and if yes, what kind of plasticene?" I'm going to pass along excerpts from Scott Williams' Canadian Conservation Institute publications concerning the silicone and showcase materials (the last articles I have are 1993). I'll suggest a silica gel system with monitoring and conditioning of the silica gel, for the low RH. And I'll suggest not to use plasticene, but rather to devise other solutions using chemically "stable" mounting materials such as those suggested in CCI publications. But does anyone suggest corrections to this advice, or more important, is there anyone who would be willing to advise my colleague directly? It would be most useful to have someone near Belgium, who would be familiar with European product names, suppliers, etc. Neal Putt ICCROM 13 Via di San Michele 00153 Rome, Italy +39 6 5855 3360 Fax +39 6 5855 3349 *** Conservation DistList Instance 10:98 Distributed: Wednesday, May 7, 1997 Message Id: cdl-10-98-005 ***Received on Tuesday, 6 May, 1997
