Subject: Workshop on conservation of sheet music
Sibley Music Library, a department of the Eastman School of Music, is offering its annual Music Binding and Preservation workshop July 21-25. The workshop comprises a basic hands-on introduction to the binding and conservation practices needed for library circulation of music, a tour of Sibley's brittle music preservation (replacement/reformat) program, and one or more special sessions covering particular student interests each year. The primary target audience is music librarians who have, or are about to have, conservation responsibilities, but also includes library conservation staff interested in the specific needs of music. Enrollment is limited to 8 students and the curriculum is tailored each year to address the particular backgrounds and needs of the class. Topics covered include: * pamphlet binding of new sheet music * paper conservation * hard-cover binding repair and adhesive binding * phase boxes and portfolio binders * what to look/ask for from commercial binders for scores * conservation supplies and suppliers * in-house photocopy preparation * overview of microfilm preservation and digital access * overview of conservation of recordings The course can be taken either for credit (1 credit, $670) or non-credit ($570). The tuition does not include room and board, which is available in the student dormitory as a separate package, or you can stay elsewhere. For anyone with an aversion to dormitories, I can help find inexpensive alternate accomodation. Registration materials come from the summer session director's office, for which the number is 800-873-2758.
