Managing Preservation for Diverse Collections Does your library or archive have a systematic preservation program? Do you want to make your current program more effective? SOLINET Preservation Field Services is pleased to announce a new educational opportunity for southeastern institutions concerned with complex preservation management issues. This workshop series consist of 15 days of training in three sessions spaced several months apart, with in-depth instruction, exercises, tours, and hands-on practice. Session One: "The Nature of Library and Archival Materials" July 15-19, 1997, SOLINET, Atlanta, GA Structure of collection materials (paper-based, photographic, magnetic media, sound recordings, motion picture film, optical media); causes of deterioration; storage requirements; needs assessment and strategic planning; and an introduction to and demonstration of collections conservation, including techniques for construction of protective enclosures and testing supplies and materials. Session Two: "Environmental Hazards to Preservation" October 14-18, 1997, Historic New Orleans Collection, New Orleans, LA Environmental control and monitoring; mechanical systems; identifying hazards; integrated pest management; mold control; disaster planning; developing a disaster plan; identifying sources of assistance and supplies; and staff training. Features a large scale, hands-on exercise in disaster recovery. Session Three: "Collection Management Issues in Preservation" March 3-7, 1998, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN Integration of preservation activities; selection for preservation; reformatting; library binding; needs assessment; budget planning; fundraising; issues associated with imaging and electronic information; and staff and user education; includes SOLINET's complete "Train the Trainer" workshop with techniques for designing and delivering educational training programs.
