Subject: Discoloration of photographs
I have a little information to add to Doug Nishimura's posting (Conservation DistList Instance: 10:92 April 24, 1997). Some time ago a friend of mine passed on to me a 'magnetic' photo album with a similar problem to that described. The album would date to the 1960's and was made in Korea. It spent most of its life in Sydney, Australia--i.e. quite humid. The first couple of leaves of the album display red staining that is associated with the (now removed) photographs. This staining is in a line around the photograph and in one case runs right underneath where it has formed what look like mould blooms. My assumption has always been that the staining was due to a mould, but just what the mechanism is I don't know. I have not done any analytical work on the stains. The staining is only heavy on the first page of the book--later pages only have the odd spot.
