Subject: Professional qualifications
In reply to the question about why the MLS for conservators in libraries: The preference for the MLS (or master's level from accredited library school) may have more to do with organizational structure than job requirements. For example, our library is relatively small, and we have few specialized positions. We are all expected to participate in planning and service functions not only throughout the library, but also campus-wide. The MLS the recognized terminal degree for librarians, so if you are working in a library, especially one connected to a larger organization, you are expected to fully participate in your professional capacity, which may--and often does--go far beyond your specific job assignments.
