Call for Papers: Effectiveness in education and training

From: Kathleen Dardes <kdardes<-a>
Date: Friday, April 25, 1997
Call for Papers:

The next Interim Meeting of the Working Group on Training in
Conservation and Restoration of the Conservation Committee of the
International Council of Museums (ICOM-CC) will take place on April
9-11, 1998 at Espoo-Vantaa Polytechnical University in Vantaa, a
suburb of Helsinki. The theme of this meeting will be Defining and
Measuring Effectiveness in Education and Training, The meeting
will complement and expand upon the discussions that took place at
the Working Group's last meeting at Maastricht in April, 1995 which
addressed the issue of internationally-accepted standards of
conservation. Discussions as Maastricht inevitably led to the
question of how competence is measured. For conservation educators,
the issue has particular significance in light of the increasing
interest in many parts of the world in accreditation and
certification. In the advent of a future in which many in the field
of conservation will be assessed for competence at various levels,
measuring the outcome of education and training efforts seems more
timely than ever.

The program for the Interim Meeting will include papers and
discussions that address various types and levels of assessment.
Papers focusing on one or more of the following points are
especially encouraged:

How are performance standards translated into learning goals and
    measures?

How can educators define and assess competence in the absence of
internationally or nationally accepted performance standards?

How can teaching strategies, methods, and materials be evaluated
    for effectiveness?

How is the longer-term impact of education and training on the
    development of the profession assessed?

Abstracts of no more than 250 words may be sent to the Working Group
Coordinator by no later than July 25, 1997. A limited number of
brief update papers (no longer than 10 minutes) on recent
developments in specific training courses or programs may also be
included, if scheduling allows. Abstracts should be addressed to
the Working Group Coordinator
