White gloves

It is my opinion that there are numerous drawbacks to using cotton
gloves on numerous objects, some of which have not been mentioned.
In the case of handling electric trains (or any mechanical movement,
such as clocks and watches), there are enough cotton linters shed to
impair or clog up most movements. In addition, the cotton can often
get caught on overlapping parts.

I would suggest that the latex glove options already mentioned (in
various DistList responses) are a better alternative. Maintaining
the equipment and mechanical parts is also just as important, e.g.
regular cleaning and oiling (but not over-oiling), careful checks
of electrical components, regular changes of filters in the air
handling system.
