Storage of weapons

In reply to Jaap van Burg's enquiry about the relative merits of
vertical or horizontal storage for arms;  I was advised by an arms
conservator to store firearms horizontally to avoid the problem of
oil leakage down from the barrel into the lock mechanism where it
can cause swelling of wood and corrosion of metal lock components.
