Papers Announced for Compensation for Loss and Other Sessions American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) 25th Annual Meeting Town and Country Hotel San Diego, California June 9-15, 1997 Early Bird Registrations Deadline is April 18 Presentations have now been finalized for AIC's 1997 annual meeting. On June 11, a session entitled "Concepts, Literature, and Technology Transfer from Industry to Conservation," sponsored by the Research and Technical Studies sub group, will include topics such as stone decay by acidic deposition; consolidants for use with calcareous stone; coatings development for corrosion control; microbial production of cellulose; electrophoresis in the identification of proteins; and uses of literature, electronic publications, and the internet in the transfer of technology. Speakers will include leaders from the field of conservation as well as from industry, government, and academia. On June 12, the general session will be devoted to an examination of "Compensation for Loss." Topics to be covered include philosophic and technical approaches to compensation and the range of materials used to mitigate losses and visual alterations. Among the 12 papers to be presented in this session are: "Compensation for Loss: Why Do We Do It?"; "When Damage is in the Story"; "Conservation, Aesthetics, or Visual Confusion? Conservation Service for Interpretive Collections of Twentieth Century Artifacts"; "Graphic and Digital Reconstruction of Losses on Ancient Material�Two Case Studies"; and "How Far To Go: Reintegrating Losses in Paintings." The conference will be preceded by a workshop, Museum Exhibit Lighting: Conservation, Lighting Design, and Current Technology, on June 9 and 10. The focus of the workshop will be on integrating conservation requirements with interpretive and aesthetic concerns, cost efficiency, and energy conservation into museum exhibition lighting. The workshop is designed for conservators as well as exhibit designers, curators, architects, and exhibition specialists. Speakers and workshop leaders will include internationally recognized museum lighting designers and conservation specialists. As in previous years, specialty groups will present programs on the conservation of architecture, books and papers, objects, paintings, photographic materials, textiles, and wooden artifacts. In addition, sessions will be conducted by the Research and Technical Studies (RATS) and Conservators in Private Practice (CIPP) sub groups. A number of workshops will be held following the meeting. AIC is the national membership organization of conservation professionals dedicated to preserving the art and historic artifacts of our cultural heritage for future generations.
