Presentations have now been finalized for AIC's 1997 annual meeting.

On June 11, a session entitled "Concepts, Literature, and Technology
Transfer from Industry to Conservation," sponsored by the Research
and Technical Studies sub group, will include topics such as stone
decay by acidic deposition; consolidants for use with calcareous
stone; coatings development for corrosion control; microbial
production of cellulose; electrophoresis in the identification of
proteins; and uses of literature, electronic publications, and the
internet in the transfer of technology. Speakers will include
leaders from the field of conservation as well as from industry,
government, and academia.

On June 12, the general session will be devoted to an examination of
"Compensation for Loss." Topics to be covered include philosophic
and technical approaches to compensation and the range of materials
used to mitigate losses and visual alterations. Among the 12 papers
to be presented in this session are: "Compensation for Loss: Why Do
We Do It?"; "When Damage is in the Story"; "Conservation,
Aesthetics, or Visual Confusion? Conservation Service for
Interpretive Collections of Twentieth Century Artifacts"; "Graphic
and Digital Reconstruction of Losses on Ancient MaterialTwo Case
Studies"; and "How Far To Go: Reintegrating Losses in Paintings."

The conference will be preceded by a workshop, Museum Exhibit
Lighting: Conservation, Lighting Design, and Current Technology, on
June 9 and 10. The focus of the workshop will be on integrating
conservation requirements with interpretive and aesthetic concerns,
cost efficiency, and energy conservation into museum exhibition
lighting. The workshop is designed for conservators as well as
exhibit designers, curators, architects, and exhibition specialists.
Speakers and workshop leaders will include internationally
recognized museum lighting designers and conservation specialists.

As in previous years, specialty groups will present programs on the
conservation of architecture, books and papers, objects, paintings,
photographic materials, textiles, and wooden artifacts. In
addition, sessions will be conducted by the Research and Technical
Studies (RATS) and Conservators in Private Practice (CIPP) sub
groups. A number of workshops will be held following the meeting.
