Subject: Egyptian sculpture
I recently treated an 18th Dynasty indurated limestone statue of Amun and Mut in the Luxor Temple in Egypt. The Mut face had suffered a loss to her nose, which was then carved out to create a rectangular cavity for a now missing replacement nose. The cavity is lined with a bright red material that seems to be organic (dissolved in Melt-Mount when I mounted a slide). Has anyone seen a similar red material lining a repair cavity? Has anyone seen similar nose repairs that they think pre-date the Roman period?
