Subject: Position at National Gallery
The following advertisement will appear in 'New Scientist' this week. This post, in the Scientific Department at the National Gallery, London, might also be of interest to computer-literate conservators. Research Post in Digital Imaging (The National Gallery, London) At the National Gallery, we have been conducting research into high-resolution digital imaging and analysis of paintings for some years. We have recently received funding from Hewlett Packard to support a nine month post to develop and extend the current digital imaging equipment, to investigate improved methods of calibration and to work on computer reconstruction of the colour in images of paintings in which pigments have undergone irreversible changes. The successful candidate will have a background in computer science, physics or natural sciences; a knowledge of colour science would be an advantage. They will have good practical skills in electronics and mechanics and will be familiar with UNIX, C and Motif - some C++ experience would be useful. Strong self-motivation, the ability to work in a small research group and an interest in seeing the results of these studies published in an appropriate journal are essential; an interest in western European painting is highly desirable. The salary for a fixed-term post for nine months will be at the equivalent of #13,500 per annum. Application forms can be obtained from The Personnel Department, The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN (+44 171 747 2812) and should be returned before the 18th of April.
