UV monitors: summary

With thanks to those who replied, here is a summary of responses to
a query regarding the best UV meter.

It may be that there is no alternative, but all responders
recommended the 763 type UV monitor, either in digital or analog
format. Most specified the Crawford meter; another mentioned the 763
model from Littlemore Scientific Engineering (ELSEC). The latter has
a web address: <URL:http://www.elsec.co.uk>. It shows the meter and
has specs.

Price seems to vary depending on the vendor. One user was very happy
with his vendor, NY Preservation Services 212-988-3869; another
recommended Scientific Sales, Inc. PO Box 725, Lawrenceville, NJ
08648 609-844-0055.

Other vendors mentioned include Cole-Parmer 800-323-4340; Minolta
Instruments Systems Div 800-724-4075; <URL:http://www.minolta.com>
and Fisher Scientific 800-766-7000. Conservation Resources
800-634-6932 also has one in its catalogue, as do many of the
standard archival catalogues. Some offer software to which one can
download and store data. Since most vendors buy from the same
manufacturer, one should check the prices; there seems to be at
least a $300 variance on the same item, depending on where it is
purchased.
