The University Museum of National Antiquities has a permanent
position available for an objects conservator.  The Museum is
administered by the Institute for Archaeology, Art History and
Numismatics at the University of Oslo in Norway.  The Institute
comprises of five departments, runs three museums (the Museum of
National Antiquities, the Viking Ship Museum and the Coin
Collection) and has approximately 90 employees. The Museum's
conservation laboratory also is responsible for collection care at
the Viking Ship Museum and the Coin Collection. Currently there are
two permanent and two term conservators in the objects conservation
laboratory.

The collection comprises of both archaeological and
non-archaeological objects, dating from the Stone Age to Reformation
(1537 A.D). Responsibilities include the conservation of fresh
archaeological material, as well as the conservation of the
collections for display and loan. Collections contain a wide range
of materials, namely metal, wood, leather, bone, horn, ceramic,
textile, glass, stone, etc, and many composites.

Additional responsibilities involve monitoring climate in display
and storage areas, the packing of objects for loans as well as
providing field assistance during excavation seasons.  There is some
travel involved in connection with loans. Large work loads demand
that the conservator is highly motivated and able to work in
multidisciplinary groups.

Successful applicants will have 3-5 years of formal training in
objects conservation or an equivalent combination of training and
experience, and should have experience treating archaeological
material and be able to apply preventive conservation principles to
collections care.

Salary, commensurate with experience, ranges from 195.900 NOK to
239.600 NOK. Applications should include certified copies of all
documents supporting conservation experience (diploma, transcripts,
etc), in addition to references.
