Preserving Diversity Through Photographs: A Workshop
Northeast Document Conservation Center
Andover, Massachusetts
April 1, 1997; 9:00 - 4:30
Co-Sponsored by the New England Museum Association
The workshop is funded in part by the National Endowment for the
Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, an agency that receives
support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The program is designed to provide information on preserving
photographs and using them to document culturally diverse
communities. Topics will include the importance of preserving the
heritage of a diverse community through photographs; using
photographs for community exhibitions, education, and outreach;
deterioration of photographs; and storage concerns in planning for
photographic preservation. The workshop is intended to strengthen
the management abilities of smaller institutions in the areas of
collections care, to raise consciousness about the significance of
collecting the heritage of multi-cultural communities, and to teach
participants simple methods for organizing and prolonging the life
of photographs. It will provide a large amount of basic, concise
information in a one-day presentation with ample time for questions,
problem solving, and hands-on examination of photographs.

Who should attend? Institution administrators, curators,
conservators, community leaders, and others with responsibility for
the preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of photographic
images are encouraged to participate.

Faculty: An interdisciplinary faculty will bring together the points
of view of conservator, educator, and community leader. The
workshop will be conducted by Gary Albright, Senior Conservator,
Northeast Document Conservation Center. Trained at the University
of Delaware/Winterthur, Mr. Albright is chairman-elect of the
Photographic Materials Group of the American Institute for
Conservation (AIC). Julie Bernson, Education and Outreach
Coordinator, Addison Gallery of American Art, and Dalia Diaz,
Publisher of Rumbo, Spanish Language Newspaper in the Merrimack
Valley, and Board of Directors member of Immigrant City Archives and
Essex Arts Center, will address using photographs for community
outreach.

Cost: The cost for the workshop is $20 which includes lunch.
Enrollment will be limited and participants will be accepted on a
first-come-first-served basis. Each application must be accompanied
by a check for $20 payable to the Northeast Document Conservation
Center (NEDCC). Refunds will be given up to one week prior to the
workshop. Substitutions are acceptable with notification.
