Subject: Drying books with canvas book jackets
I've been gathering information about drying methods for county record books which have canvas (cotton) jackets. What the vendors say is: * If water soaked books are vacuum dried with the pressure low enough that the water is sublimated, then the canvas will not shrink. * If the vacuum drying involves a higher pressure, then water is in liquid form during the drying process, and the canvas jackets will shrink. * If the books are air dried the canvas jackets will shrink. Based on this information it would be best to remove canvas jackets from water soaked books most of the time. I'm interested in hearing about real life results from people who have had water damaged record books with canvas jackets.
